1928-2022
American architect, designer, and painter
Kipp Stewart was born in Pittsburgh in 1928 but lived and was educated in California from a young age. His future in design and the arts was revealed to Stewart at age 15 when, on the way to school in Los Angeles one day, he fell in love with the pencilled industrial drawings that were displayed in a storefront window on Melrose Avenue.
He enrolled at Chouinard Art Institute in the late 1940s; in addition to furniture design, Stewart’s facility and passion for the arts led to significant works in painting, photography, and architecture. The Ventana Inn in Big Sur is his most widely-known architectural project. Stewart’s paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries in major cities, including MoMA.
He was a cherished member of the community.
